Another Sunny Day in Gotham City
Where are Heroes and Villains in today’s world?
Another fun-filled day in Gotham City? For most, that is probably how they would feel anywhere in the United States on any given day — provided the weather is fair. As we have matured and outgrown our Saturday morning cartoons there seems to be something missing. There is no mindless comedy to watch that reeks of truth, honor, and righteousness. Have the villains won?
Villains — Where are they now?
We think of the villains of yesterday. They are less obvious now than they were on Saturday morning cartoons, where they were identified by “those meddling kids” or a superhero.
Villains are more discreet now, integrating with our society and bending their convictions and ideals to meet their own. It isn’t often that we can see a man running around creating havoc, dressed as a clown, penguin, or another animal — but when we do, the quick attention drawn to them brings a fairly quick demise.
Our villains are now dressed as businessmen and women, scout leaders, elected officials, and religious leaders. The friendly man down the street handing out candy or puppies to the children is potentially an enemy of the people, if not the state. Our guard has been down for too long, and now it shows. Villains have infiltrated our society.
