Don’t Shake A Cold

That is the latest thing. The trend today is not to shake hands when we are ill and we no longer cover our mouths with our hands when we sneeze or cough.

What is now emphasized is our actions when we sneeze or cough. We do it into our elbow, protecting our hands and covering our face, as we cough or sneeze. My kids had to teach me this when they were in elementary school. I didn’t know this had changed. When did it change?

Why has this changed and what else is new? When it comes to etiquette and illnesses, I believe we are headed to “Retroville”. The days of old have returned, where we tipped our hats to one another -especially a man to a lady.

Bump & Grind!

A bit more crass, yet still useful, is the fist-bump I see on occasion. A return to the nod of a head or tip of the hat, whatever the case may be, would seem to be the actions of a more civilized society.

One thing is for certain, society does not want us to touch one another, not when it comes to spreading germs. CONIV-19 (novel Coronavirus) has given us pause, as we consider how we’ve been thinking about illness and disease.
