Remembering Dad on Father’s Day
A Celebration of a Life Well Lived
As Father’s Day approaches, it brings with it an array of emotions that, for me, are more intense this year. This will be the first time I will mark this occasion without my father, a man who lived a life of service and dedication. He passed away in January, leaving a void that’s both immeasurable and profound.
My father was an army reservist, serving in the veterinary corps, and working as a chief food inspector, an oddly fascinating role which was worlds away from the battlefront. He also held the title of an ambulance driver, a position riddled with potential drama and daring feats. Yet, in a comically ironic twist of fate, he never once encountered an ambulance throughout his entire service. Such were the little quirks that made my father’s journey uniquely his own.
The discipline and the commitment he learned from the army, he applied to his civilian life, too. For years, he was an installer and repairman for the local telephone company, a profession he embarked on when telephone wires crisscrossed our skies and telephone booths peppered our streets. He worked his way up, retiring from the Private Branch Exchange (PBX) business systems division, an unsung hero ensuring seamless communication in an increasingly connected world.
